A Library of Art in Charlottesville
1500 Gordon Ave, Charlottesville, VA 22903“In an age of growing disconnection, we need to focus on developing successful and amiable social spaces, and the Gordon Avenue Library is an excellent space to create this. The Library of Communication proposes the idea of reshaping the Gordon Avenue Library into a prospering social space centered around the arts. This addition provides ample space for the creation of “communicative” art, primarily through the mediums of print and radio. Variations between spaces are dictated through a maintenance of sound and heaviness depending on intended use, which helps quiet places stay quiet and loud spaces stay inviting. Reshaping the meaning of the “library” will help persist the infrastructure’s importance on communities worldwide, and can become the cultural hubs as they used to be.”
An addition to the Gordon Avenue Library, with spaces dedicated for:
- Congregation
- Cooking
- Creating + sharing art
- Radio + performance
- Contemplating + conversing
Designed through interviewing, iterative modeling, and articulating program to create a space intertwined with its context.
The shape swings towards the environment, replacing the former parking space with a semi-private yard for a variety of events.
Maintaining mobility while creating seamless transitions between spaces indoor and outdoor was essential.
